Project Sahara-A Post outside Stanites Alumni but a noble cause
The world is right now facing a crisis like never before. Confined to our homes with our families, all our thoughts are about staying safe. But we belong to a minuscule percentage of the world's population that has the wherewithal to bear the financial loss this is causing. There are countless millions across the world who will find it very difficult to survive the financial crisis, even if they do manage to survive the health one.

Coonoor has a migrant population of around 500, who come seeking a livelihood far away from their homes in Jharkhand, Bihar, Bengal and Odisha. They bring their expertise and build our homes. We are now seeing on TV, the thousands of such migrant workers in Delhi choosing to walk all the way back to their villages in Bihar/ UP to avoid starvation. We hope through our intervention the migrants in the Nilgiris will never need to think on those lines.

Many of you have been wondering how to support our migrant labour/ daily wage labour and destitute in Coonoor and surrounding areas, who may be left without supplies during this lock down. I am happy to tell you that many contractors/ employers are already addressing the problem for their individual workers. But there are many workers, including locals with no ration card/ destitute/ homeless persons who need our support. And as always, there is also a group of people who are working to resolve the situation so our workers who give their days to build our homes, feel supported in these difficult times.

As we write this, the homeless have already been shifted to shelters. We will ascertain the kind of support these shelters will need. For the rest, the plan is to provide a packet of dry ration supplies to groups of four persons, the contents of which are given in the list in the annexure to this letter. We are working with the Administration, through field visits, to ascertain exact numbers that need our help. We believe at the moment that it will be in the range of 300-400 persons, and that the cost of each package will be approximately Rs. 700.  In addition we will need funds to send dry rations to shelters housing the homeless.

We now would like to reach out to all of you who would like to help. Please open your hearts and donate generously to help our workers. Every 700 rupees you donate will go towards helping a group of 4 persons for a week to ten days.

The donations will be received by:

Sri Jain Nav Yuvak Sangh
Vijaya Bank
300301011003320
Ifsc  VIJB0003003

All donations will be covered under the 80G tax benefit and all donors will receive certificates for the same.

Please forward this note to all your contacts and request everyone to donate to this cause. Thank you for your generosity and magnanimity to help the group of people who need us. Let us say with pride, just like our district is the safest in India, it is also the most generous and hospitable to all those migrant laborers who come and work for us, and build our beautiful homes!

Thank you very much for your help. God bless you!

With best wishes and regards,

The Project Sahara
